SCHINFO
Helmut Stult (schinfo)
- first attempts in 1982 with a
friend's Sinclair ZX80 / 1kB RAM<
It was then "hugely" upgraded - doubling the RAM to 2kB and expanding BASIC ROM with
additional commands + new keyboard foil
- 1983 - Started in IT (programming
of test systems at an automobile manufacturer and the first own C64)
- operator of one of the first
mailboxes in Bavaria (SCHINFO-BBS) on C64 + 4 x 1541 floppy drive with
self-written software
- formerly
Fido-Net member 2:246/11 (SCHINFO-BBS in the Fine Bavarian Net)
- first private internet user in
Ingolstadt (domain: schinfo.muc.de)
- development (along with a good
Friend) of a long-term test system, based on Commodore Amiga 2000,
as well as two information systems based on Commodore Amiga 500 - both with self-developed ones
and produced port cards
(Board layout with Dröge CAD), everything for a well-known automobile manufacturer.
- use Linux since v0.97 (had space on
a 3.5 floppy disk)
- former Linux Mint Bronze sponsor and user
- from August 2018 switching to Manjaro Linux Cinnamon, finally
all the otherwise necessary PPAs
(e.g. with Linux Mint, Debian, Ubuntu) had been gone.
- now more convinced since March 2026
Arch Linux Cinnamon user, because Arch Linux is always up to date
(unlike Manjaro real rolling release) and doesn't have all the unnecessary and insecure kernel patches of Manjaro.
in addition, the updates are actually tested (Core-Testing, Extra-Testing,
Multilib-Testing, GNOME-Testing, KDE-Testing) and only
released after o.k. from the team.
Manjaro acts as if this is also happening, but that is almost not the case!!!
-
for these reasons, I would like to apologize for and retract the statements made during my presentations
about Manjaro at the Linux Days.
Unfortunately, like many others, I saw everything through rose-colored glasses and didn't recognize the reality.
Personally, I can only advise anyone who values data and future security not to use Manjaro.
With “archinstall” there is also a very good TUI available, that should enable anyone to install Arch Linux without any problems.
-
AUR (Arch User Repository)
maintainer and co-maintainer (schinfo) for various packages
- Now an equally convinced Apple hater (have sold all the devices) despite my formerly deep conviction
(Apple II - self-built clone), because the prices quoted at Apple are only due to the great hype.
- use of Windoof only as a "playground" for Hak5- and NirSoft/Sysinternal-Tools and various other nice tools and
gadgets.
If an IT guy uses Windows, that's the case, so Eckehart Witzigmann
would cook canned ravioli!
- formerly freelance author for computer
magazines DOS and DOS Extra
- collaboration on various computer
books
- various lectures at the adult education center on internet topics
(e.g. internet driving license from bingo e.V. Ingolstadt)
- various security projects
(WLAN / Deauther, USB etc.) with lectures and demonstrations at the CCC Congress and various Linux days
- stopped for lack of time (I'm retired now and as we all know, so I never have time ;-) )
Below some information about my involvement and exit from Manjaro:
- First contact with Philip Müller (Manjaro) on October 19, 2018 at 6:07 p.m. via email.
I convinced him to take part in the Chemnitz Linux Days 2019.
- After the great success in Chemnitz, I procured a trade fair stand,
with which we were represented for the first time at LinuxDay 2019 in Dornbirn.
- Former Member of the Manjaro core team until July 2021
(together with Philip Müller and Bernhard Landauer),
mainly collaboration on the Cinnamon edition and Manjaro ARM.
Also developing of Manjaro backup + security solutions.
- Former Manjaro-speaker at Linux Events in Germany
(Chemnitz Linux Days, Linux-Infoday Augsburg, Tübix)
and Austria (LinuxDay Dornbirn)
And for general information on the current situation at Manjaro:
-
I drafted club statutes back in 2019 that would have made it possible to found a club.
This was then discarded because Manjaro GmbH & Co. KG was founded.
The reason for this was the financial participation by a well-known philanthropist in the high six-figure range.
Unfortunately, this unique opportunity (comparable to 6 numbers in the lottery) was not taken advantage of.
which is why Manjaro is in the current situation
-
Unfortunately, you can see that Manjaro is more or less "dead" by the fact that the
homepage hasn't been updated for two years.
Only Philip himself and Mark Wagie seem to be actively working on Manjaro.
The number of posts in the forum hardly reaches more than 10 per day.
A certain "someone" would interpret it like this - "no posts - no bugs" :-)
-
The reason that I threw in the towel after the very large and time-consuming commitment to Manjaro is due
to the same problem that led to the small revolt and
Manifesto 2.0 in March 2026
So far, as I expected, nothing has happened in this regard. You should just be familiar with German association law
before you start such actions (and NOT from within the country).
I provided Roman Gilg with my draft club statutes from 2019 on March 19, 2026 after he asked me to do so.
He tried to reach me by phone on March 18, 2026 (after a good 2 years without contact) because he too
(and as an equal managing director) is having problems getting along with Philip.
At Manjaro, I monitored around 150 programs for updates and always kept them up to date.
I also compiled all kernels for the latest version up to twice a week, which alone took up to 6 hours each time.
At Manjaro, as is often the case, a lot of people feel compelled to have a say (the so-called "community"),
but none of them are really actively involved in the distribution !!!
By collaboration I mean, for example, programming, PKGBUILD and script creation and not wearing the title
“Forum Moderator” or “Team Member”.
